Text: Lavoisier (Antoine Laurent) Chimiste immortel! Né à Paris, le 16 [sic] Août 1743 et mort sur l’échafaud le 3 [sic] mai 1794, victime du systême impitoyable d’extermination qu’exécutait à cette époque l’infâme Société de Jésus, sous la masque du républicanisme. Lavoisier est représentée au milieu des bocaux qui ont servis à ses dernières expériences dans son cachot de la Conciergerie ou, la veille de mort parvint à pénétrer une députation du Lycée des Arts, pour lui offrir une couronne. C’est sans doute, à ce moment que le peintre a pu esquisser à la hâte ce portrait avec du bistre. A défaut de boîte à couleurs qu’on n’aurait pas laissée passer; on voit que cette toile n’a j’aimais été sur chassis. Nous l’avons retrouvée à Bruxelles en 1825; c’est d’après elle qu’a été gravé le portrait inséré dans le recueil des Portraits et histoire des bienfaiteurs de l’humanité (12 Février 1833). Comment: The caption is on the back of the painting. The attribution to Jean François Garneray, a pupil of David, seem to be coherent with the tradition which attributes the production of this but to David’s atelier. The attribution has been established by comparing the painting with Alix’s engraving in which it is stated that the bust was engraved after a painting of Garneray. The striking similarity of the features presented in the painting with those of the engraving further supports the hypothesis that this painting was indeed made by Garneray. According to Scheler this copy was made in David’s atelier after David’s painting. If this is the case the painting was made in 1788. In 1964 the painting was in the private collection of comte Jean de Tocqueville.
