Abstract: This is a curious copy of David's portrait which introduces, in addition to Lavoisier and his wife, the presence of three men, surrounding Lavoisier while writing at his desk and of a woman, standing besides Madame Lavoisier (first from left). It seems reasonable to believe that the artist intended to portray the équipe of the Méthode de nomenclature chimique (a work on the reform of chemical nomenclature published by Lavoisier, Guyton, Fourcroy and Lavoisier) with the addition of Madame Lavoisier and Madame Picardet (she was mistress and later wife of Guyton and acquainted with Madame Lavoisier), both translators of chemical works. The romantic pose of the man standing on the right dressed in red who looks at Madame Picardet, suggests a romantic pictorial style, an element which postpones the date of the painting to well into the 19th century. The poor quality of the painting suggests that it is a product of an amateur. The painting shows areas of restoration.
