Mercury thermometer with glass scale (diamond cut?) by Mossy, with brass attachment at end for suspension. Marked at top of scale: 'Par Mossy Quay Pelletier à Paris 1782'. Scale marked every 5 degrees from -15° to 90°, on both sides of thermometer stem. Every range of 5 degrees is divided into five parts and each of these parts is subdivided into a further five parts. The instrument is suspended from a hook in the wooden case; the top end of the case is rounded with a hook outside for suspension. At various points of the scale, as in many French thermometers of this period, there are other indications on the scale, these being often marked right across the scale, i.e. half of the word on one side of the stem and half on the other. Here, on the right at the mark 15 (really -15) is the date '1776' (a very cold winter in Paris): opposite at the fifteenth division above this is marked on the left 'Paris', and opposite and twentieth division on the right is '1740'. Opposite 0° on the left is marked 'Glace': on the same side above 10° is marked 'Tem' for 'Temperé'. On the left at 26° is marked 'Bains'. On the left at 31° is marked 'Paris' and opposite at the right '1753'. Below the 80° mark on the left with an arrow pointing from 80° is the word 'Eau' and opposite 'bouill' (eau bouillante). |
