Abstract: (1773-07-20): Combustion of phosphorous. Experiment described in the Opuscules. "Il y a diminution de volume de l'air pendant la combustion du phosphore et je l'ai attribuée jusqu'ici à la fixation de ce même air, mais ne pourrait-il pas arriver que ce fut la seule humidité de l'air qui fut absorbée et que l'air ainsi privé de son humidité ne diminuait de volume." Lavoisier assured himself that the absence of water had no effect on the diminution by carrying out experiment over mercury. The same experiment was repeated the 7 August. The gain in weight was superior to that of the air absorbed, it comes from a little water absorbed at the same time.
