(1795-10-22): At the Lycée des arts Bouillon-Lagrange reads an obituary of Lavoisier according to which Dumas, in answer to those who sought to save Lavoisier from the guillotine by extolling his virtues as a scientist, purportedly said “France has no need of chemists” . This apocryphal and very oft-repeated phrase was the very best way of feeding the image of Lavoisier as a martyr sacrificed for his scientific research. |
