Very little is known about the cultural background of this interesting painting. Langenmantel was probably inspired by Duplessi’s engraving of 1798 illustrating an imaginary reconstruction of Lavoisier’s arrest. Here too in fact the scene of the arrest is unrealistic both in the reconstruction of the event (Lavoisier was never arrested) and of the setting (the laboratory resembles that of an alchemist rather than that of an 18th century chemist).
