Abstract: |
Self portrait of Madame Lavoisier |

Grimaux confines himself to write that this pastel portrays “M.lle Paulze enfant”. An intriguing hypothesis, based on an oral tradition, suggests that “le petit pastel serait un autoportrait réalisé avec l’aide de David qui donnait à M.lle Paulze des leçons de dessin.” (private communication by Jean de Rohan Chabot, February 10, 1999). If this is the case Madame Lavoisier must have had David as a teacher when the painter was beginning his career at the Vien’s atelier. Since it is obvious that at some stage in her education Madame Lavoisier took drawing’s lessons it is plausible that David had been her first tutor. |
