[Obverse]: Ant. Laur. Lavoisier. [Reverse]: L’an 8 Ph. Gengembre essayait de perfectionner les monnaies. [On rim]: Republique française. [On edge]: A la patrie. Aux science. |
Comment: |
The chemist Philippe Gengembre (1764-1838) had been a pupil of Lavoisier, professor of mathematics, physics and chemistry at the Ecole des poudres and, in 1803, inspecteur générale of the mint. The idealized profile of Lavoisier made by Andrieu anticipated of 6 years that by M. Brossard. It would be interesting to know if Andrieu too had been aquatinted with Lavoisier. Of this medal Andrieu produced two slightly different specimens. |
