(1796-04-19): At the Lycée des arts, the director Charles Désaudray reads an eulogy of the anatomist Desault and at the end of the ceremony, the busts of Lavoisier and Desault are placed at the top of two pyramids built for the occasion. Some 3000 people attended the new ceremony in which an éloge written by Fourcroy is read, together with an ode on the immortality of the soul, by the organiser of the event, Charles Désaudray, and a “hyérodrame” entitled La mort de Lavoisier. In addition to arranging this event Désaudray had set up a fund for the construction of a new pyramid in the hall of the Lycée and the preparation of a funeral ceremony to dedicate to his deceased colleague. This ceremony was probably at the origin of the terracotta medallion depicting Lavoisier made by the sculptor Pierre-Nicolas Beauvallet, member of the Lycée des arts, now with the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia . Furthermore, the inscription “Lavoisier, menbre [sic] du lycée des Arts” recalls the last days of Lavoisier’s scientific activities and indicates that the sculptor wished to commemorate his achievements in relation to the Lycée. |
